Day #9 - Uliastai to Chjargas Lake (350Km)

Posted on 21st June, 2016

22/6/2016 - NEWS - The Boys enter Russia and find some WIFI !!

##################################################

Well then another day another chapter in this adventure !
After finagling getting fuel we set of on our next journey . First 80km of tracks were great - flat and sandy . Then it all went downhill back to rutted potholed roads for the next 170km. Finally we get close to the campsite and we see salt flats - flats no potholes! One problem we enter via a track and his as we leave we hit a massive salt accumulation and the car fills with dust - we couldn't see a thing !!!! It got everywhere - the car was a travelling dust container.
Campsite lovely position again but after a tough day more cars have trouble . Bentley has a broken chassis , one of the Alfas has issues and endless cars being worked on as I'm writing this and it's nearly midnight ! It will be a long night for the mechanics.
Tomorrow last full day in Mongolia . Fabulous country , stunning scenery and people and some of the worst 'roads' in the World. Tomorrow it's all about trying to get the car through another challenging day without any damage . Russia here we come !

Lunch stop !  -  The tracks never end !

Dust everywhere!

Another broken car - being trailered to Russia for repairs
The moon rising as we say goodnight . The view didn't last long it's now pouring down again ! G & R

Day #9 - Uliastai to Chjarges Lake - Mongolia (350km)

Admin: Still limited comms from Richard & Graham, some texts have landed to say 'All Ok' - not sure if that's code for SEND FOOD QUICK or WE NEED A SHOWER!!

We read on Syd Stelvio's Daily Report they have blue sky - so lets hope that lifts their spirits and they get the pedal to the metal! Position 24!  Go Go Miss Daisy!!

Day: 7hrs 42mins (Total 71hrs 3mins) Overall Position: 24  Class Position: 8

"Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world. Gustave Flaubert.  In a country the size of Mongolia, the 19th largest in the world, this sentiment hits the nail the head and what we saw today made us realise that this country is one full paradox and contrast.

Mongolia, a cruel mistress as observed yesterday, is also a two faced one, and like Janus himself we saw both sides today. A complete contrast in terms of weather, landscape and road surface.......

......The last few kilometres of the day were a blessing - and a relief - and like everything else we’ve seen since waking up, a complete contrast to the beginning of the day. Billiard board smooth tarmac wafted the tired and broken crews into tonight's camp, on the banks of Lake Chjargas which sits at 1041m"
